Lewis Bergman ( L.B.) Maytag

While in College, L.B. Maytag spent summers skimming slag in the Maytag foundry, but when he joined the company permanently in 1910, washing machine manufacture was separated from farm implement manufacture and placed in his charge. Chosen for the presidency in 1921, L.B. subsequently resigned in 1924, telling his father F.L., "I'm a promoter, not a banker." Moving to Colorado in 1935, L.B. eventually reestablished Maytag ties by joining the board of directors after his brother E.H., died in 1940. As a board member, he advocated employee benefit programs in the 1940's and 1950's and served as a valuable advisor to Fred Maytag II during his presidency. L.B. died in 1967.
